EC discriminates against Bnp-backed candidates: Emajuddin

Convenor of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed yesterday accused the Election Commission of severe discriminatory attitude towards the opposition backed candidates from carrying out their campaign ahead of the city polls in Dhaka and Chittagong on April 28.“The government, in one hand, has withdrawn 16 cases that included murder and attempt to murder and on the other hand our mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation Mirza Abbas has been denied bail. So, we want to inform the nation that we do not accept it easily,” he said while addressing a press conference at the office of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon, a pro-BNP intellectual platform, at Purana Paltan in the city.
He objected to an alleged statement of ruling Awami League backed mayoral candidate Sayeed Khokan asking people to vote for the symbol of “Hilsha Fish” to save their lives and he termed it as a threat.
“We want free, fair and acceptable city polls amid festivities,” he added.
Prof Emajuddin condemned the alleged attacks by ruling party elements on people carrying election campaign in favour of Mirza Abbas at Bongshal area in the afternoon.
Journalist Shawkat Mahmud, member secretary of the organisation, Prof Mahbub Ullal, Abdul Hye Sikder, M Abdullah and Jahangir Alam Mintu, among others, were present at the press conference. – Staff Reporter
