EC search body to submit 10 names to President 


Dhaka – The search committee is likely to finalise 20-member short list on Thursday afternoon after scrutinizing from 125 names proposed by the 25 registered political parties to reconstitute the next Election Commission (EC), sources said.Sources said that the six-member search committee is likely to finalise the short list from Thursday’s meeting scheduled to be held at the Judges Lounge of the Supreme Court at 4.00pm.
Sources also said that the search committee would finally submit 10-names to the president in order to reconstitute the next EC. After getting 10-names from the search committee the president will pick 5 names to form the EC to oversee the next general election scheduled to be held in 2019.
The search committee will place its recommendations to the president on February 6 or 7, it was learnt.
The newly search committee held two separate meeting with country’s eminent personalities in the meantime.
Four personalities gave their opinions to the search committee yesterday afternoon and later they talked to the media saying that they have put their faith on the search committee and hoped the committee would recommend the best names to the president to form the next EC.
Abu Hena, a former chief election commissioner said, “The next election commissioners have to be competent, honest and they must remain strong to keep themselves outside political influence.”
Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud said, “It will be great challenge for the new election commission to hold the election under the political government.”
Earlier, the election commission organized the parliamentary election under the caretaker government. The caretaker government did not interfere with the EC in previous times. But, this time the new EC will face great challenged as they will hold the election under the political government. So, the new EC should be formed with non-political persons, he noted.
Daily Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar said they have “confidence” on the search committee that they will come up with “good proposals” for the next batch of election commissioners.
“We hope that the search committee will send the competent names to the president to reconstitute the next EC,” he noted.
He also said that the search committee should more careful about the chief election commissioner. If the CEC will not strong, capable, skilled and experienced person, the next EC will be zero. The next EC should be strong for the greater interest of the country, he added.
After the meeting, additional secretary to the cabinet division Abdul Wadud told reporters that the four personalities suggested the EC should be composed of individuals with clean images, administrative skill, the physical and mental capacity to fulfill their duties and the ability to stand up under pressure.
He also said that the six members of the search panel will meet again at 4pm on Thursday.
Yesterday’s meeting with the second batch with civil society leaders took place in the backdrop of the search committee short-listing 20 names from those recommended by different political parties as potential Election Commissioners.
On Monday, the Election Commission search committee has had talks with 12 other representatives of the civil society.
President Abdul Hamid formed the six-member search panel headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain after holding a series of talks with 31 registered political parties.
The tenure of the incumbent Election Commission, headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, expires this month. The new commission will arrange the parliamentary election slated for 2019. – Staff Reporter
