Embankment collapses: Shariatpur braces for Padma erosion

Shariatpur, Sept 27 (UNB) –One hundred meters of river banks protection embankment in Naria upazila of the district collapsed on Thursday due to severe erosion by the Padma River.

A mosque, a number of trees and dwelling houses went into the gorge of the mighty river in the evening, creating panic among local people.

Local residents shifted 50 houses to safer places following the sudden erosion.

Shariatpur Water Development Board sources said some 100 metres of the embankment caved in due to rise of water level in the Padma River for the last one week.

Joyonti Rupa, Naria Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said they have started removing local people to safer places and Water Development Board is taking preparation for dumping work for protecting the embankment.

Last year, eight kilometers area of the upazila witnessed massive erosion, rendering over 6000 people homeless. Houses, schools, mosques and other establishments were also washed away by the river.
