Embattled JU VC decides to step down

Embattled Jahangirnagar University (JU) Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Anwar Hossain on Sunday said he would resign from his post soon after meeting the President.
“I’ve wanted appointment for next Sunday to meet President Abdul Hamid and then I’ll declare my resignation from the post,” he told journalists over telephone in the afternoon.
JU Teachers’ Association (Juta) has declared the VC persona non grata on the campus and that is why he has been staying at a rented house in the capital’s Uttara area.
Since April 27 last year, the members of Juta have been on a movement demanding the resignation of Prof Anwar Hossain for his reluctance to punish JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League secretary Rajib Ahmed Russell who physically assaulted a teacher.
After a High Court order on May 24, JUTA backtracked, but later they resumed agitation under a new banner.
On October 23, Juta threatened to go for an all-out strike unless the VC resigned or was removed by October 31.
On the following day, the VC announced that he would step down once anyone was selected as a new VC by the Senate under his supervision and then return to University of Dhaka, his former workplace.
