The BNP Chairperson is playing the ‘blame game’, HM Ershad has said, responding to Khaleda Zia’s recent claim that Ershad was the man behind the murders of her husband Ziaur Rahman and Maj Gen Muhammad Abul Manzur.
Addressing a discussion at Institute of Diploma Engineers on Saturday, the Jatiya Party chief said, “Khaleda Zia called me a killer. I know who was beside Zia’s room when he was being murdered. I know who the real killer is.” He, however, did not take names.“Justice Abdus Sattar was in power at the time. He had also announced Tk 500,000 reward for Manzur’s capture,” he added.
Gen Zia was killed by some military officers in 1981 at Chittagong Circuit House.
Maj Gen Manzur was blamed for his assassination. He was taken by the Army from police custody and killed.
Ershad, then the army chief, declared Martial Law and assumed state power.
Later, Zia’s widow Khaleda took the helm of the BNP, the party her husband had founded.
Zia’s assassination was never tried in civil court but Manzur’s trial has reached its final stage. Ershad is the prime accused in his murder case.
The court scheduled a date for the trial’s verdict, but the case’s reinvestigation was ordered on Feb 27 following a plea by the state.
Khaleda on May 1 alleged Ershad was the one responsible for the murder of her husband.
But Ershad on Saturday questioned Khaleda’s failure to try him even though she had headed two governments since.
“Your (Khaleda) party was in power for 10 years. You didn’t hold any trial or seek justice. Now you are calling me a killer!”
She was now playing the ‘blame game’ after failing to lead the BNP’s movement in the streets, said the former military dictator.
Meanwhile, over the recent spike in abductions and murders in Bangladesh, the special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held the government responsible.
Ershad said, “The people are losing their right to live.”
Stating that people had lost their faith in both the Awami League and the BNP, he asked Jatiya Party supporters to prepare to contest next national election alone. – bdnews24.com
