Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad yesterday underscored the need for bringing changes in the electoral system of local government elections, in a bid to hold its elections in a free, fair and credible manner.
“The ongoing Union Parishad elections cannot be acceptable under any circumstance and that’s why we have already gave a proposal to the government that the partisan system electoral system should be changed for the sake of holding local government elections in democratic manner,” he said.
The former president was addressing a programme was organized to unveil logo for his party’s upcoming eighth central council session in a city convention centre yesterday.
He said the ongoing UP elections are not being held in free, fair and credible manner just because the elections have been being held under political banners. So, this electoral system should be changed immediately, he insisted.
However, the Election Commission is holding the local government elections under partisan manner for the first time in its history.
Calling upon the party leaders and workers to be united and extend their helping hands to the party, Ershad said BNP has become a weak political due to its wrong decision of boycotting the last January 5 elections and forging three month long violent programme. “So we should use the opportunity,” he added.
Speaking at the occasion party’s senior Co-chairman and opposition leader Raushan Ershad called upon the party leaders to give their total support to make the party’s ensuing council session a success.
She also said party’s dedicated and committed leaders will be evaluated by giving them important positions in the party through its ensuing council session scheduled to be held on May 14.
