Establish rights of disabled women, seminar told

A National Seminar on “Rights of Disabled Woman and Child 2015” was held on Wednesdayat the Biduyt Bhaban, Bijoy Hall, Abdul Gani Road, Dhaka. The objective of seminar was to focus to promote the focus for making the rights real of Disabled Women and Disabled Children. BPKS, a national resource organization in the field of disabled people rights movement, organized the seminar.The seminar was participated by more than two hundred responsible personnel and leaders from different Government agencies, NGOs, disabled people organization and civil society. Honorable Land Minister Shamsur Rahaman Sherif MP addressed the valued meeting as Chief Guest in the seminar. Honorable National Parliament Member Begum Sagufta Yasmin, Additional Secretary and Executive Director of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) Md. Kaikobad Hossain and Additional Secretary (Admin) of Social Welfare Ministry Mr. Khandoker Atiar Rohman were present as Special Guests on this program. Renowned disability rights activist Md Abdus Sattar Dulal, the executive director of BPKS presided over the meeting, while Prof. Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kollimulla of Dhaka University and founder of JANIPOP mediated the seminar presentation and open discussion.
The key stresses of the seminar pointed out by Honorable Minister Shamsur Rahaman Sherif MP were to take the issue of disabled women and children issues as high priority, change the attitude from charity or medical model to rights based, to know the details of disabled women and children problems in all development areas and build sensitivity among all duty bearers for proper implementation of the policy. The president of the Honorable National Parliament Member Begum Sagufta Yasmin made emphasis on her speech on the issues as human rights, as it has been the sensitively prior matter of present Prime Minister.
Other distinguish presenters, special guests and participants joined a fruitful discussion in which the rights issues of disabled women and children was depicted as a matter of access to education, justice, legal capacity, equal opportunities, non discrimination, anti-violence movement, reasonable accommodation, participation and so on. Finally the meeting president, ‘UN ESCAP Disability Rights Champion’ Mr. Dulal concluded with an urge to come forward in the movement of rights of disabled women and children considering it as duty of all responsible citizens. – Press release
