Ex-BCL leader at union level held for torturing imam

Patuakhali, Apr 21 – Police arrested a former leader of union unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for shaving the head of an imam (Islamic cleric) of a mosque in Mirzaganj upazila on Saturday night.The arrestee was identified as Russel Howlader, 26, son of Abdul Khaleque Hawlader and ex-president of Mirzaganj Union BCL.
Russel was arrested from his relative’s house, said Mehedi Hasan, inspector (investigation) of Mirzaganj Police Station.
Witnesses said Russel in association with some of his aides tied the victim to a tree, beat him up, shaved his head and fed him with human excreta forcibly on Thursday night.
On information, police rescued the victim from the spot and took him to Mirzaganj upazila health complex for treatment.
Police arrested Md Ansar, 20, and Md Jalil, 28, from the spot while others, including Russel, managed to flee.
Abdur Razzak, elder brother of the victim, filed a case with Mirzaganj Police Station in this connection, accusing five people, including Russel.
The victim, Abdul Goffar, 30, of Sonapura village under Mirzaganj upazila in the district, has been serving as the imam of a mosque at Miarhat village under Betagi upazila in Barguna district.
Police and the victim’s family members said Goffar was used to provide treatment (jhar-fook) locally to patients.
Russell called Goffar on his cell phone asking him to come to Mirzaganj upazila town, saying that he needed treatment for one of his relatives. – UNB
