Dhaka, Apr 13 – Three convicts in the Sylhet grenade attack case who were hanged on Wednesday night were buried at their village homes early Thursday. They were Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and two otyhers Delwar Alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul. Mufti Hannan was buried at his village home in Gopalganj districts while his two others in Chandpur and Moulvibazar districts respectively.
They were convicted and sentenced to death over the grenade attack on ex-British envoy Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004. Three policemen were killed while the envoy and 40 employees of the Sylhet district administration were injured in the attack.
Mufti Hannan was also one of the principal accused in the August 21 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue killing about two dozen people including AL’s women wing chief Ivy Rahman, wife of Zillur Rahman who later became President of the country.
On Wednesday night, Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associates — Delwar Alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul. Mufti Hannan and Bipul were executed at Kashimpur Central Jail at 10:01pm and Ripon at Sylhet Central Jail at about the same time.
Earlier on Tuesday President Abdul Hamid rejected their petitions seeking clemency.
Mufti Hannan was buried at his family graveyard after a namaj-e-janaza at Hiron Bala Girls’ Madrasha and Orphanage premises around 5:45 am. Mufti Hannan’s brother Munshi Aliuzzaman led the namaj-e-janaza.
An ambulance carrying the body of the executed Huji Chief reached there at around 5:20 am amid tight security. Kotalipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zilal Hossain, executive magistrate Mahbub Jamil and officer-in-charge of Kotali Para Police Station Quamrul Faruk were present during the burial.
Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul was buried at his family graveyard around 4:30 am at Meshadi village in Sadar upazila of Chandpur district. Bipul’s father Hemayet Uddin received the body and a namaj-e-janaza was offered near the graveyard by Bipul’s family members and relatives.
Delwar Alias Ripon the other associate of Mufti Hannan, was buried at his village home after a namaz-e-janaza at Konagaon Shahi Eidgah Maidan in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district early Thursday.
Imam Ibrahim Ali of Konagaon Jam-e-Mosque led the namaj-e-janaza around 12:15 am. An ambulance carrying Ripon’s body reached his village fifteen minutes before.
On March 19 last, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Mufti Hannan, Ripon and Bipul after hearing the review petitions filed by the three death-row convicts.
On December 7, last year, the SC bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, upheld the death penalty of the three in the case rejecting appeals filed by the Huji chief and Bipul challenging the High Court verdict that had upheld their death sentence awarded by a tribunal.
On February 11, 2016, the High Court delivered the verdict upholding the death sentence of the three.
In 2004, the then British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury came under a grenade attack while coming out of Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in his hometown Sylhet.
Assistant sub-inspector Kamal Uddin died on the spot while two constables — Rubel Ahmed and Habil Miah — succumbed to their injuries at hospital. the British envoy and about 40 employees of the Sylhet district administration were injured in the attack – GW News Desk with UNB
