Expat murder: Traders observe shutdown in Gopalganj

Traders in the district town of Gopalganj kept the shutters of their business establishments down on Thursday protesting the killing of

Austrian expatriate Sheikh Masudur Rahman Rabet.

Rabet, son of former general secretary of district Jatiya Party and local trader late Sheikh Nasir Ahmed, was chopped to death in the
district town early Monday.

Sammilita Bebosayi Samity observed the daylong hartal demanding the trial of the killers of the expatriate.

Locals said a brawl ensued between Rabet and former municipality councillor Dilip Kumar Saha Dipu over a trifling matter at a puja
mandap at Sikdarpara in the town in the early hours of Monday.

At one stage, an angry mob beat Rabet with sticks and chopped him with sharp weapons, leaving him injured. Later, he succumbed to his
injuries at a hospital after one hour.

Police arrested 16 people, including Dipu, in connection with the incident. – UNB
