Farmers can harvest four crops from the same land annually through expanded cultivation of short duration BU dhan 1 during Aman season adopting newer cropping pattern to increase food production through crop intensification.
Agriculture experts said this at a farmers’ field day arranged by RDRS Bangladesh for harvesting BU dhan 1 at the field of farmer Abdur Razzaque in village Kishamat Keshurbari of Thakurgaon on Wednesday afternoon.Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Thakurgaon Belayet Hossain attended the occasion as the chief guest with Headmaster of Barogaon Merdhapara Government Primary School Nilkanto Barman in the chair.Crop Production Specialist of the DAE Zaherul Islam and Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Farhana Yasmin addressed the ceremony as the special guests.Project Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Sadekul Islam delivered welcome speech narrating the cultivation technology for BU dhan 1 adopting the short duration Aman paddy-mustard-mug-parija paddy cropping pattern evolved by the NGO. Sub-assistant Agriculture Officer Rasheduzzaman, Chairman of Barogaon Union Federation Rezaul Islam and Agriculture Officer of RDRS Bangladesh and farmer Abdur Razzaque also spoke.Project Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Sadekul Islam said Professor Dr Abdul Hamid of the Department of Agronomy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University (BSMRAU) invented BU dhan1 paddy few years back.RDRS Bangladesh has been popularizing cultivation of the paddy among farmers adopting the newer cropping pattern since 2011 under technical supports from the BSMRAU and financial assistances of the Krishi Gobeshona Foundation. This time, 1,800 farmers have cultivated the paddy on 1,800 bigha lands with the assistances of RDRS Bangladesh in Rangpur division and harvest of the paddy continues at this peak hour of the seasonal lean period, he said. Due to medium fine quality and longer grain size as well as having some good flavours, the farmers get higher prices as compared to other short duration rice varieties and the cattle heads highly prefer eating BU dhan 1 straws, he added. The chief guest stressed for popularizing cultivation of BU dhan 1 to increase cropping intensity and system productivity in upland ecosystem, minimize ground water use in rice cultivation and improve soil quality and reduce cost of chemical fertilizer application. After harvesting BU dhan 1 in the ceremony, farmer Abdur Razzaque got 4.25 tonnes paddy yield per hectare land and hoped for cultivating
early variety vegetables, potato, mug and other crops it in the same land soon.BSS, Rangpur
