Dhaka – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday termed the ruling Awami League as an old and tested autocratic party.
“Awami League is there wherever there is killing, terrorism and manipulation of tender. So, there is no scope to address them as new autocrat. We have seen as to what type of monster it can turn to whenever it comes to power,” he said while speaking at a discussion meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity.“The (AL) will speak for democracy but they work against it. He added.
The Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a pro-BNP physicians’ platform, arranged the meeting to mark the 26th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon.
The BNP secretary general called upon the government to come to a path of consensus by shunning its audacity of hope and egotism.
“Please, take an initiative to hold talks on Khaleda Zia’s proposal on formation of the Election Commission. Take the lead like statesman. This country is not a paternal property of any person,” he observed.
He accused the government of killing over one thousand of its leaders and activists, another 500 were victims of the enforced disappearance and thousands were maimed.
Mirza Alamgir said some people want to say that BNP could not carry out movement but they are not right as many people were killed during the movements before the January 5, 2014 general polls and after the polls and there is no leader and activist who was not implicated in a case.
He alleged that the AL has destroyed all the achievements of the country.
Presided over by Dr Sirajul Islam, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s adviser Amanullah Aman, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, Nazimudidn Alam, Habibur Rahman Habib, Fazlul Haque Milon and Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.
Earlier, speaking at another function, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that the country’s democracy is almost dead.
“Ziaur Rahman had restored democracy from one-party Baksal, against democracy was restored from Ershad by waging movement. But now the democracy is almost dead,” he said while addressing a discussion at DRU. Deshnetri Forum organized the meeting. – Staff Reporter
