A scuffle over lunch packs broke out among some of the Narayanganj 7-murder accused, including prime accused Nur Hossain, during the noon-break in Saturday’s hearing at a Narayanganj courtroom.The clash ensued when Habildar Emdadul Haque, an accused, slapped Nur Hossain as the latter rebuked the former for taking two lunch packs. Nur Hossain’s lawyer distributed 23 lunch packs among the accused in the courtroom, but Emdadul did create a shortage by taking two for himself.
Later, Nur Hossain’s followers, including Ali Mohammad and Mostafa Zaman Churchill, started beating Emdadul inside the courtroom. Police intervened and stopped the tussle after a while.
Earlier, the defence lawyers cross-examined Investigation Officer of the case, Mamunur Rashid, who is now posted as an inspector of the Special Branch (SB) of Narayanganj police, from 9am to 1:45pm before the break.
After the break when the scuffle took place, the hearing began at 2:45pm and the defence lawyers cross-examined the Investigation Officer till 4:45pm.
During the cross-examination, Abdur Rashid, lawyer of accused sacked army man Maj (retd) Arif Hossain, asked the IO Mamunur Rashid whether members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Adam Ali and Abdus Samad protested when the bodies of the victims were being thrown into the confluence of three rivers.
The IO in reply said Adam Ali protested, but Abdus Samad kept mum for he feared Maj (retd) Arif.
The court fixed the next hearing in the case on September 29.
On April 27, 2014, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of Narayanganj.
At the same time, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Three days after their abduction, the bodies of six people, including those of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on April 30 the same year.
The following day, the body of Jahangir, car driver of Nazrul Islam, was also recovered from the river.
Nur Hossian, a Narayanganj city Awami League leader and also a councillor, and his associates went into hiding following the abduction and killing of the seven people.
Shahidul Islam alias Shahid Chairman, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, alleged that some officials of elite force Rab killed Nazrul Islam in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain.
Nur Hossain was shown arrested in 11 cases, including the two cases filed over the seven-murder. He and two other accused in the case — Khan Sumon and Wahiduzzaman — were arrested from an apartment in Kolkata on June 14, 2014. He was brought back home from India on November 12, 2015.
