‘Floods damage Boro paddy, hit 850,088 families’


Dhaka, Apr 27 (UNB) – Boro crops on 219,840 hectares of land have fully been damaged by flood in six districts of the country since March 29 last, affecting 850,088 families, accordingly to government estimate.The flood caused by heavy rainfall and onrush from the upstream also damaged 18,205 houses either fully or partially in 62 upazilas of Sunamganj, Sylhet, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts, said a Disaster Management and Relief Ministry press release on Thursday night.
It said 3,924 tonnes of GR rice and Tk 2.19 crore in cash have so far been allocated for the flood-affected people.
Besides, 32,340 tonnes of rice were allocated for distributing among 3.3 lakh families under the vulnerable group feeding (VGF) programme till July next and Tk 82.07 crore more for 91,447 beneficiaries under the employment generation scheme for the hardcore poor.
The release said the leave of all officials and employees of the ministry and organisations under it, and all government servants in the haor regions have been cancelled. – UNB
