Foggy weather disrupts Bangladesh ferry services

Ferry services on the Shemulia-Kewrakandi route remained suspended for over 13 hours on Tuesday night due to dense fog.
Foggy weather is being experienced in the country for about a week with the advent of the winter. Fog also disturbs movement of motor vehicles on roads and highways, but its effect on inland water communication is particularly felt more, as river transports miss channels and hit shaols due to poor visibility.Haltage of ferry services in the morning due to foggy weather has been reported almost everyday for the last one week. Winter in Bangladesh normaly lasts till January.
Habibul Islam, senior terminal superintendent of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Kewrakandi ghat, said river communications on the route was suspended at 9.00pm due to poor visibility caused by dense fog.
The ferry services could not be restored till filing of this report at9.00am on Wednesday.
As a result, nine ferries –- Beer Shresta Ruhul Amin, Korobi, Raipura, Faridpur, Ranikhet, Taplu, Raniganj, Kalmilata and Kakoli — remained stranded in the middle of the river Padma.
Hundreds of vehicles and 2,000 passengers waited on both sides of the river from Tuesday night.
