Food fortification with Vitamin A on anvil


The government is actively considering gradually fortifying all food items with Vitamin A alongside edible oil to prevent the diseases caused by the deficit of the crucial vitamin.
Industries Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan on Wednesday disclosed this at a workshop on the draft guidelines made in light of the ‘Edible Oil Fortification with Vitamin ‘A’ Act-2013’.He said the government is first implementing the project of the fortification of edible oil with Vitamin A.
Mentioning that the objective of the project is to build a healthy nation by not imposing additional load on oil refiners, Bhuiyan urged them to fortify edible oil with Vitamin A.
He said the diseases caused due to the lack of Vitamin A are possible to prevent through proper implementation of the ‘Edible Oil Fortification with Vitamin A Act-2013’.
The secretary also urged all concerned to extend their hands to implement the law in public interests.
The workshop decided that the owners of the oil refiners will be allowed to give their written opinions on the draft guidelines formulated in light of the Act within a week.
Later, the ministry will finalise the guidelines after necessary assessment and evaluation.
There are 22 edible oil refinery plants in the country and majority of them have signed a memorandum of understanding with the ministry for Vitamin A fortification.- UNB
