Foolproof security measures were taken in the city and its adjacent areas to avert any untoward incident during the two big religious festivals of Muslims and Hindu communities.
Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community, is scheduled to be held from 10 October to October 14 and Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest festivals for Muslims, will be held on October 16.According to the police sources, the city along with its outskirts is very sensitive area as the communal elements are active here. Any time miscreants may create trouble in the city and could break the religious harmony, police officials apprehended. Sarder Tamij Uddin, acting commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, says four-tier security measures have been adopted in the city areas.He adds 11 police men would be deployed at the very important puja
mandaps, nine at important mandaps and six police men would be deployed at general puja mandaps in the city.He also said that already police, Rapid Action Battalion teams, city
especial branch of police and detective branch had been deployed at the sacrificial animal haats, shopping centres and important points of the city as Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha are coming closure.Tamij Uddin said carrying, manufacturing, possessing, marketing and explosion of all kinds of firearms and crackers have been banned in the city during the festivals. Meanwhile necessary preparation is going on in full swing in the city and nine upazilas of the district for celebration of the Durga Puja. In the metropolis, many Hindu devotees were seen passing busiest time in preparation of welcoming the goddess Durga to the earth and celebrate the occasion.
Besides, idol makers have been working day and night for the last few days to accomplish their task of making idols within the stipulated time while many interested people irrespective of religious beliefs are seen visiting the places to see decoration works.The Hindu Communities are also painting and cleaning their houses and business places to mark the day.Alok Kumar Das, General Secretray of city Puja Udjapon Parishad, says decoration of deity with colour and erection of mandaps is going on amid enthusiasm and fanfare while a total of 66 mandaps will be set up in the city while 337 in nine upazilas of the district. Alok Das also said that about 100 groups of idol makers of Rajshahi are now busy in their works at the mandaps and they already completed 90 per cent works of making as well as adorning the idols. Tapon Kumar Sen, a trusty of Hindu Religious Welfare Trust said that the five-day Durga puja begins tomorrow (Thursday) and will close on October 14 through observation of Vijaya Dashami while Saptami will be
observed on October 11, Ashtami on October 12, Navami on October 13. The authorities concerned have given assurances of smooth supply of electricity to all puja mandaps at nights to enable the Hindu devotees offering their prayers, puja, archanas, kirtons and other religious
