BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy along with three other leaders were put on a three-day remand on Friday, following their arrest from different places in the capital.
Earlier in the morning, plainclothes police arrested the senior BNP leader from a house in the city’s Shiddheshwari area.
The detectives also arrested Turagh thana BNP unit president Atiqur Rahman and two more BNP leaders — Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Mizanur Rahman — in drives in the capital’s Turagh area.
All the four BNP leaders were arrested in a case for obstructing on duty police and assaulting ruling Awami League MP Chhabi Biswas in front of the Emergency Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday.Following the arrest of the four leaders, Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge Habil Hossain produced them before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Tasruzzaman and sought a 10-day remand for them each.
In response, the court placed the arrested on a three-day remand.
Meanwhile, the country’s political situation started heating up again over the 20-party alliance’s Gazipur rally with district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student associate body of the ruling Awami League, threatening not to allow BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to enter Gazipur until BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman apologises for calling Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a ‘Razakar’.
But, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia announced that their rally in Gazipur will be held at any cost.
The remand of the four BNP leaders is also adding fuel to the growing political tension with only one day left for the Gazipur rally.
The local administration in Gazipur also imposed section 144 in Bhawal Badre Alam Government College area from Friday.
To protest the imposition of section 144, BNP announced a daylong hartal in Gazipur for Saturday. – UNB
