Gazipur boiler blast death toll jumps to 13


Dhaka – The bodies of four more people were found in the debris following the boiler explosion at Multi-Fabs Ltd in Nayarapara area on Tuesday evening, raising the death toll from the incident to 13.Firefighters found three bodies in the rubble of the factory around 6:45pm, said Akhtaruzzaman, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence. The trio could not be identified immediately.Besides, the body of Amirul Islam, an engineer, was retrieved from under the debris of the factory in the morning, he said.The fire brigade team started their rescue operation for the 2nd day on Tuesday.Earlier, nine people were killed and around 52 others injured as the boiler exploded at the factory on Monday evening.Of them, eight died on the spot while Solaiman Miah, 30, son of late Liakat Ali of Palashbari of Gaibandha, succumbed to his injuries at hospital.The eight other deceased are Mahbubur Rahman, 23, son of Shahar Ali in Sonatala upazila of Bogra district, Abdus Salam, 55, son of late Moksed Ahmed of Mirsarai in Chittagong, Gias Uddin, 30, son of Bachchu in Sadar upazila of Chandpur, Al Amin, 30, son of Aiyub Ali Sardar in Harishpur of Magura, Biplab Chandra Sheel, 38, son of Monindonath of Goalanda upazila in Rajbari, Mujibur Rahman, 37, son of Sagor Ali of Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria, Mansur, 30, and Arshad Hossain, 36.Of the deceased, eight bodies were handed over to the family members, said Akhtaruzzaman. Meanwhile, two probe bodies were formed to investigate the incident.Additional district magistrate Rahinul Islam said the district administration formed an eight-member probe committee, led by him, to look into the incident.The committee started its work today, Rahinul said, adding that they will complete the inquiry giving priority to seven issues, including the expiry of the boiler, condition of its safety bulb and experience of directors.As part of the investigation, the probe committee members visited the spot, met factory workers and employees, and held a meeting with experts on boiler, he said.The additional district magistrate said they have information primarily that the boiler’s lifespan expired on June 24.Besides, the Fire Service and Civil Defence formed a three-member committee to probe the incident.Meanwhile, the authorities of Multi-Fabs Ltd, where the boiler exploded, closed the factory for an indefinite period, said its workers.Besides, the authorities of 10 garment factories of the area closed their factories for Tuesday (today) following the incident.After visiting the spot on Tuesday, State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque announced to provide Tk 8 lakh for each family of the deceased.Of the compensation, the ministry will provide to Tk 5 lakh while the factory authorities the rest, he said.Besides, this district administration provided Tk 20,000 for the burial of each deceased.UNB news agency
