German Ambassador in Dhaka Albrecht Conze on Monday stressed the need for ‘peaceful, fair and inclusive elections’ to strengthen Bangladesh’s democracy.   The envoy made the remark at a reception at the Radisson Hotel marking the Day of German. Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni was also present.   Conze, however, voiced his concern over the state of social rights and working standards in Bangladesh, said a German Embassy press release.   “The country is expected to become the world’s biggest exporter of readymade garments a few years from now. Should the biggest not attempt also to be the best?”   He said German companies are ready to engage in helping the Bay of Bengal become a new economic powerhouse and acknowledged Bangladesh’s unique geographic situation between the emerging economies of India and China.   The envoy also spoke about the ‘state of transition’ which both Germany and Bangladesh were actually going through and, with respect to Bangladesh, expressed the hope “that this period will be marked by respect, restraint, and responsibility”.   Turning to trade and foreign investment in Bangladesh, Conze was optimistic and said, “More of both will further reduce this country’s dependence on foreign aid.”   The German Ambassador praised bilateral cooperation and stressed the need for peaceful, fair and inclusive elections. “Trust has grown deep between our two nations, and our joint achievements are manifold.”   Welcoming his guests, Ambassador Albrecht Conze praised the accomplishments of bilateral cooperation and addressed a number of challenges and opportunities for Bangladesh.   The Ambassador paid tributes to the numerous joint achievements of Bangladesh and Germany and addressed the growing attractiveness of Germany for students from Bangladesh.   “Thousands of Bangladeshi students apply for visa, seeking high quality education at a price affordable to a middle class family.”   Conze expects that these students of today will build the bridges of tomorrow between Germany and Bangladesh. “The next generation will surprise us all, with their innovative energy and their extraordinary determination to succeed,” he added.   The Ambassador praised Bangladesh’s success in achieving some of the UN Millennium Development Goals, and in making progress on the way of reaching most of the others.   As to the post-2015 development agenda, he was confident that “together, Germany and Bangladesh should be able to use their considerable weight in formulating the second set of global development goals.” – UNB
