BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Sunday asked the opposition leaders and activists to take to the streets if the government does not restore the caretaker government system by October 24. “There’s no room for running the current parliament session after October 24…Take to the streets if the government doesn’t restore the caretaker government system by the time,” he said. He also urged the opposition men not to leave the streets until the government accepts the demand for arranging the next polls under a non-partisan administration. Rafiqul made the call while addressing a discussion on caretaker government arranged by Free Thinkers’ Forum at the Jatiya Press Club. In an apparent move to put the opposition leaders and activists at war mood, he said, “You can’t realise the demand sitting in air-conditioned rooms. “You must come to the streets to force the Sheikh Hasina-led government to concede to our demand.” Describing article 123 (3) of the constitution, the noted lawyer said if the government runs the parliament session after October 24, it will be violation of the national charter. He criticised the ruling party for convening a rally in the capital to counter the opposition’s one, and said thus the government is inviting the countrymen to a civil war. The BNP leader also alleged that Awami League convened the programme as part of its plan to create anarchy in the country to cling to power. – UNB
