BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday
alleged that government agents were vandalising temples and churches
in a bid to destroy the country’s communal harmony.“The government is conspiring to gain advantages in the general
election by spoiling the traditional amity existing among the members
of different faiths,” he said while addressing a rally organised by
the BNP-led 18-party alliance on Garea Eidgah maidan in Sadar upazila.
Chaired by Garea union BNP president Redwanul Islam, the rally was
addressed, among others, by former MP Akhtaruzzaman, district BNP
general secretary Taimur Rahman and district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer
Maulana Abdul Hakim.
The rally was held protesting the killing of six people in the firings
by BGB and police at Garea on February 28. The programme was also
aimed at registering protest against the filing of cases accusing
1,500 opposition activists.
Referring to the killing of six people by BGB and police, the BNP
leader said: “The Prime Minister must stand trial for the killing. The
trial must be held on the country’s soil.”
“About 250 people were killed recently. How long the ruling party will
continue such killings? They (Awami League) again want to go to power
by killing people. Now, the time has come to force the government to
step down through a movement,” said Fakhrul.
He demanded a judicial investigation into the Garea killing and
exemplary punishment to those responsible for the killing.
Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul visited the houses of the victims and consoled
their family members.UNB
