Govt allocates Tk 619.86 cr to launch EGPP for the poorest

The government has allocated Taka 619.86 crore as labour wages for launching first-phase of the special Employment Generation Project for the Poorest (EGPP) throughout the country from November next, official sources said.
The huge amount of money has been allocated for creating adequate jobs for 7,74,833 poor and distressed people including women and farm-labourers in 485 upazilas of all 64 districts in the country to improve their livelihoods during the seasonal lean period.In addition to this, the government has also allocated Tk 69.57 crore as non-wage costs and another Tk 6.28 crore as wages for the labour ‘Sarders’ to ensure smooth implementation of the project, the sources
said. Under the special EGPP, 1,55,862 ultra poor people in all 58 upazilas of Rangpur division will have job opportunities to earn Taka 200 per day wage per head for 40 days till December 31 next through working five days in a week.District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers (DRRO) Abdus Salam of Rangpur said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has allocated the huge amount of money under the government’s social safety networks to ensure better livelihoods for the poor.During implementation of the programme, each of the card-holder beneficiaries including distressed women will work five days in a week to earn Tk 8,000 as wages per head for their 40-day works during the two-month period.Under the programme, the beneficiaries will conduct infrastructural development works like cleaning weeds, preparing compost heaps, renovating, repairing and conducting earth-filling works for bridges, culverts, roads, waterbodies, ponds, canals, educational and religious institutions and others. Meanwhile, necessary preparations are nearing completion to launch the EGPP from November and each beneficiary will get weekly wages of Tk 1,000 for five days on every Thursday through their own bank accounts opened at Tk 10 at the local branches. Talking to BSS, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) of Rangpur division Narayan Chandra Barma said special steps would be
taken to ensure accountability and transparency in the whole process of proper implementation of the infrastructural development activities under the programme.The poorer section people in all eight districts of Rangpur division have been passing a bite-less lean period for the fifth consecutive year this year during tenure of the present government and the EGPP would further assist them in earning better wages, he added.Under the programme, the government has allocated Tk 28.80 crore for 36,008 ultra poor beneficiaries in Rangpur and they will earn better
wages during the bite-less seasonal lean period for the fifth consecutive time this year. Tk 28.90 crore has been allocated for 36,132 beneficiaries in Kurigram, Tk 4.75 crore for 5,946 in Lalmonirhat, Tk 10.67 crore for 13,349 in Gaibandha and Tk 27.11 crore for 33,897 beneficiaries in Nilphamari districts. Besides, Tk 11.28 crore has been allocated for 14,109 beneficiaries in Dinajpur, Tk 5.60 crore for 7,008 beneficiaries in Thakurgaon and Tk 7.53 crore for 9,413 beneficiaries in Panchagarh under the first-phase of EGPP during this year. -BSS,Rangpur
