Govt for fair polls, Muhith tells Ban Ki-moon

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said that the government is committed to holding a free, fair and neutral election in Bangladesh like the other parliamentary democratic countries of the world.He made the observation on Tuesday during a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the latter’s office in New York, said a handout.
Muhith informed the UN Secretary General that a total of 6,000 different kinds of elections were held under the present government without any problem and many opposition backed candidates won in these elections.
“Neither the ruling party, nor the opposition could raise any question about these elections,” he told Ban Ki-moon.
The Finance Minister also said that “the Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina) is very much respectful to the public opinion and voting rights of the people.”
Describing the success stories and experiences of Bangladesh in achieving the MDGs, he requested the UN Secretary General that to fix the next MDGs the UN should consider the main issues of the countries like Bangladesh such as infrastructure development, ensuring food security and facing the challenges of climate change.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his optimism that Bangladesh would march forward in every sector like economy defying various obstacles.
PM’s Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi and Bangladesh Permanent Representative in the United Nations Dr Abul Momen were present during the meeting. UNB
