BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday alleged that the government started using the foreigners killing to carryout repression on opposition leaders and activists.“We are observing with surprise and concern that the government has started a dirty campaign against opposition parties by involving them in the heinous killings of an Italian aid worker and Japanese national without going through any proper investigation,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added, the government is also arresting top opposition leaders including Tariqul Islam implicating them in “false cases” with a motive to suppress the opposition and dissident opinion.
BNP leader claimed that the government wants to divert the attention of the people as well as the international community from the recent killings, without launching fair and fair investigation into the killings.
“We have condemned the foreigners’ killing and demanded punishment of the perpetrators through carrying out fair trial. But like in the past, the government is trying to suppress the opposition parties and views by diverting people’s attention from the incident in order to cover up its failures,” he added.
He further said the government has already intensified its repression and harassment on the opposition leaders and workers.
Fakhrul termed taking the ailing BNP leader from hospital to the jail as a repressive move and demanded of the government to send party’s detained joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi back to the BSMMU for better treatment.
He alleged that an intolerable political situation has been created in the country but the government does not take any initiative to overcome it rather it is taking the country towards a dangerous situation to establish one-party system of government.
“The government move has thrown the nation to uncertainty, instability and deep crisis. We have been repeatedly calling hr government to create ac congenial atmosphere and politics of tolerance but eh government has failed to take any positive step toward them,” he said.
The BNP leader also demanded withdrawal of false cases filed against party leaders and activists including Tariqul Islam and their release the detained leaders.
He also demanded holding free and neutral investigation into all the killing including the two foreigners and to book the perpetrators to the justice.
