Dhaka, May 25 – BNP on Thursday alleged that the government is using law enforcers to arrest the ‘opposition’ leaders and activists and foil their peaceful programmes.“Police attacked our peaceful protest rallies and foiled those at different parts of Dhaka city today (Thursday). They also arrested our leaders and activists and raided their houses. The government has unleashed the law enforcers to thwart our programmes,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He came up with the allegation at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
The BNP leader strongly condemned and protested the police action.
Earlier on Wednesday, BNP announced demonstration programmes in all cities, district towns and all thanas of Dhaka city for Thursday in protest against the denial of permission for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Rizvi said police obstructed their protest programmes at thanas of the city. “The government gets worried whenever BNP announces any rally or political programme in fear of losing power.”
He alleged that the government is making all-out efforts to revive ‘one-party Baksal rule’ by suppressing BNP and foiling its political programmes.
The BNP leader urged the government to return to the path of democracy shunning its brutal repressive acts.
He also demanded the government immediately release those were arrested during BNP’s demonstration programme after withdrawing the cases filed against them.
Meanwhile, Dhaka south unit BNP announced to hold a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday protesting the arrest of its leaders and activists and obstruction to their protest programme. – UNB
