A senior BNP leader has alleged that the government is plotting to push the country towards a state of emergency by announcing ‘back-to-back programmes’.The party’s Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday said the government was hatching conspiracies to invoke emergency.
“The government has granted Hefazat-e-Islam the permission to stage rally on the one hand and they are plotting to impose a state of emergency on the other by instigating the shutdown called by a group of socio-cultural organisations,” he told during a human-chain programme in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka.
He also alleged that the government was trying to push the country towards ‘more instability’.
Earlier, the Hefazat-e-Islam a radical group from Chittagong, allegedly backed by the Jamaat-e-Islami, announced a rally in the capital on April 6, after marching from the port city, demanding actions against ‘atheists and blasphemous bloggers’ of the Shahbagh’s Ganajagaran Mancha.
On the other hand, 25 organisations, including the Sector Commanders Forum and the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, have called a 24-hour nationwide shutdown starting 6pm on Friday to resist the long march. The left parties of the country have lent their support to the strike.
The Ganajagaran Mancha has also called for a nationwide transport blockade against the Hifazat long march. bdnews
