The BNP yesterday called upon the new committee of the ruling Awami League headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader to take steps to form a search committee on the basis of opinions of all the stakeholders to find out the new members of the Election Commission (EC).“We urge the government to form an acceptable Election Commission by forming a search committee on basis of opinions of the stakeholders,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press conference held at party central office at Naya Paltan in the city.
He also called upon the new committee of the ruling Awami League to take due initiatives to ensure holding a free, fair an acceptable national elections under a neutral government.
Rizvi’s comments came two day after the two-day council of the AL held at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday and Sunday.
He alleged that it seemed that hanging onto power by holding bloodstained elections was the main theme of the just concluded national council of the Awami League.
The BNP leader referred to the speech of AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that “the AL has to go to power again by any means and BNP would not be allowed to go to power.”
“The matter was highlighted in the speech of AL president at their council session. The countrymen also believe it,” he said.
The BNP leader also criticized the newly elected AL general secretary Obaidul Quader for his statement that BNP had done a mistake by boycotting the January 5 polls and they would lose their way in the quick sand of time.
“These statements proved that the AL would play a role of encroacher in the next polls by holding it under them ignoring the public opinion,” he added.
Rizvi alleged that their party leaders and activists are being implicated in false cases massively.
He said the nation did not get anything from the AL council to be optimistic about restoration of democracy in the country rather the comments of the ruling party leaders reflected their autocratic and despotic attitude.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdus Salam, Khairul Kabir Khokan, Abdus Salam Azad and Taiful Islam Tipu, among others, were present at the press conference.-STAFF REPORTER
