Dhaka – BNP on Wednesday accused the government of unnecessarily buying time to ensure better treatment of its chairperson Khaleda Zia with a motive to endanger her life.Speaking at an iftar party, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called upon the government to take immediate steps for Khaleda’s treatment at United Hospital.
Bangladesh Labour Party, one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the programme at a city hotel.
“Our party and her (Khaleda’s) family have already announced to bear all the expenses of her treatment at United Hospital. So, now any delay in ensuring our leader’s treatment means putting her life at stake,” Fakhrul said.
He, however, hoped that good sense will prevail upon the government to send Khaleda to the United Hospital for her proper treatment.
Turning down the Home Minister’s remark about ensuring Khaleda’s treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Fakhrul said their chairperson has confidence in the treatment of United Hospital. “It’s not mentioned in the jail code that prisoners must receive treatment at public hospitals only.”
He alleged that the government is making all ‘evil’ efforts to keep the BNP chief away from people, politics and the next general election.
The BNP leader warned that the government cannot keep her in jail for a long time as people will free her through a movement.
He alleged that the government established a reign of terror across the country through its repressive acts, including mass arrest, extrajudicial killing and enforced disappearance.
“It’s painful that people are being killed like birds in an independent country. We strongly condemn it… the ongoing extrajudicial killing must be stopped immediately. Or else, you must be responsible for it someday,” Fakhrul added.
Mentioning that the country is passing through a very critical time, he called upon the democratic forces to forge a national unity to overcome it, and ensure a fair and credible election in the country.UNB
