Dhaka-The government will not spare illegal occupants those who have erected structures on the bank of rivers across the country including city rivers, shipping minister Shajahan Khan has said yesterday.“We will conduct mobile courts against the encroaches. The mobile court will take measures as per law against the illegal occupants including fine and jail,” the minister said while talking to this correspondent at his secretariat office.
He further said a total of 4,063 demarcation pillars have been installed in city rivers and 5,011 pillars in river Shitlakhya to prevent encroachment.
“We have instructed the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to conduct a survey and eviction drive against building owners that constructed grabbing the Fatullah canal illegally,” Shajahan Khan said.
The BIWTA has identified about 4,500 structures that constructed illegally grabbing the river banks. Of them, around 3,950 illegal structures have already been evicted from the banks of river so far, the minister said.
The committee members of Taskforce will visit the Savar Tannery Village on August 3 in a view to shift the factories from the city’s Hazaribagh, he said.
The minister said all the industrial units should have to introduce Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP). “The department of environment (DoE) will conduct mobile courts to ensure ETP in every industrial unit,” he added.
“We have submitted a report before the High Court to safe the Adi Buriganga (old). Measures will be taken after getting the HC directives,” Shajahan Khan said in reply to a query.
Three eco-parks will be constructed at Kanchpur, Tongi and Ashulia to protect the river banks from encroachment, the shipping minister said.
“We have already constructed 20-km long walkway alongside the river banks. More 50-km walkways would be constructed to save the river banks,” Khan said.
He further said the government is committed to save the country’s rivers from encroachment.-STAFF REPORTER
