‘Gunfight’ again: Alleged pirate leader killed in Pirojpur

A alleged ringleader of a pirate gang was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Kaukhali upazila on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Nazir Ahmed Sabuj, 40, allegedly the chief of ‘Sabuj Bahini’.
Deputy commanding officer Major Adnan of Rab-8 said they had secret information that a group of bandits was taking preparations in the College field area of the upazila headquarters to commit robbery.
Based on the information, a patrol team of the Rab unit launched a drive in the area around 6:45pm to arrest the gangsters.
Sensing the presence of the elite force team, the goons opened fire on them, promoting the Rab members to fire back that triggered a gun battle.
Sabuj was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, said Adnan. His accomplices, however, managed to flee.
Later, the Rab team recovered one foreign-made pistol, two rifles, one single-barrel gun, 10 bullets and four crude bombs from the spot.
Sabuj was allegedly accused in 20 cases filed with different police stations in the district and Dhaka, the Rab officer said. – UNB
