Happy testifies for Cricketer Shahadat & his wife

Mahfuza Akter Happy, an 11-year-old house help who earlier had given her deposition to a magistrate accusing her employers cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife Jesmin Jahan of torturing her, now testifies there retracting her allegations.Tanzina Islam, Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5, recorded the statements of Happy and her maternal uncle Mohammad Shohagh on Wednesday.
The tribunal fixed December 31 for the next hearing in the case filed by journalist Khandakar Mozammel Haque, against Shahadat and her wife Nitya with Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act-2000.
Talking to reporters about the victim’s new testimony, special public prosecutor Ali Asgar Shwapan said the witness ‘turned hostile’ as she made statement for the duo accused.
In her statement, Happy said, “My leg had got fractured in an accident and I can’t recall anything which I have told to the investigation officer and police.”
Earlier, on July 12, a Dhaka tribunal issued warrants for the arrest of the victim.
The tribunal issued the warrants as Mozammel and Happy did not appear before it for 4-5 times to give testimony in the case.
On September 6, 2014, Happy, 11, the domestic help of Shahadat’s residence, was found lying injured on a road in Sangbadik Colony area at Pallabi in Dhaka.
Happy had claimed that Shahdat and his wife tortured her. And the couple had gone into hiding following this.
The following day, Mozammel Haque filed the case against Shahadat and her wife with Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act-2000.
On December 29, inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station M Shafiqur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a chargesheet before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court against Shahadat and Nitya.
On January 12, 2016, the case was transferred to Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 from the CMM court.
Later, the tribunal framed charges against Shahadat and his wife on February 22.
