Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said that her party, the Awami
League, was capable of running on its own and was not dependent on the
“formulae” or advice provided by others.Without mentioning names, she told a programme in Gonobhaban that
“democracy can not be secured with formulae from failed individuals”.
Sheikh Hasina has just been relected president of her party.
Earlier on Saturday, former advisor to a caretaker government Akbar
Ali Khan suggested four proposals on the formation for an interim
government ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
According to one of his proposals, if both the ruling and the main
opposition parties arrived at an understanding on the question of a
caretaker government, the constitution could then be amended and the
President could seek advice or directives from the Supreme Court over
polls under a non-partisan interim government.
Khan also suggested the formation of a 10-member interim cabinet with
five MPs each from the ruling and the opposition sides, including both
the chairpersons.
Hasina was addressing party activists when they called on her to
extend their congratulations on being re-elected the party chief.
She urged the party workers to hold conventions in those areas where
it had not been held so far.
“We are preparing for elections,” Hasina said.
She promised meeting grass root level workers in small groups as part
of the party’s poll preparations.
She expressed satisfaction over the “successful” completion of the
19th party council.
