Dhaka, Nov 4 – The High Court yesterday directed the Election Commission to register the Trinamul BNP, led by former minister Nazmul Huda as a political party. In response to a writ petition, the HC bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi came up with the rule.
During the hearing on the petition, the HC bench heard the amicus curiae opinions of former Attorney General ASF Hasan Arif, former Attorney General MK Rahman and advocate Shahdeen Malik.
Earlier, on June 14 this year, the election commission rejected the application saying Nazmul Huda did not submit the application and Chalan for the registration on time.
Nazmul Huda, former BNP leader, filed the petition with the High Court in August this year challenging a decision of the EC that rejected an application filed by Nazmul Huda seeking registration of his party.
On August 14, the HC bench issued a rule asking the Election Commission to explain why it should not be directed to register the Trinomul BNP led by Nazmul Huda as a political party. After a hearing on the rule, the court yesterday delivered the verdict.
Huda represented the petition in court himself, accompanied by lawyer Ashanur Rahman. Deputy Attorney General Amatul Karim represented the state. Touheedul Islam represented the Election Commission.
Now, the election commission has to register the Trinamul BNP without delay following the High Court order, Ashanur Rahman said.
Huda has formed three parties under the names Bangladesh National Front, Bangladesh National Alliance and Bangladesh Manabadhikar Party since leaving the BNP. The Trinamul BNP is his fourth party. – Staff Reporter
