Dhaka – The High Court on Thursday paved the way for BNP mayoral candidate Kawsar Zaman Babla to contest Rangpur City Corporation election to be held on December 21.The HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque dropped a writ petition from its cause list, which was filed by the Sonali Bank challenging the legality of the BNP’s Vice President Kawsar Zaman Babla candidacy for Rangpur city polls.
Barrister Badruddoza Badol, counsel for Babla, told reporters that there is no legal bar for his client to contest for the post of Rangpur City Corporation mayor following the High Court order.
In response to a query that whether the HC bench would hear the matter, later on, Badal said that there is no time for hearing on the matter later on as the High Court would go on vacation from December 15 and will reopen next year. But, only six days are left to the election, he added.

The Sonali Bank the same day submitted a petition to the returning officer to cancel his candidature on the charge of loan default but the petition was rejected.
Then, the bank appealed to the divisional commissioner of Rangpur challenging the returning officer’s decision but the official also rejected the appeal on November 30 and allowed him to contest the election.
After that, the Sonali Bank authorities filed the writ petition with the HC challenging the legality of divisional commissioner’s order.
The returning officer in Rangapur had on November 26 confirmed nominations of Babla and six others for the Rangpur mayoral race scheduled to be held on December 21. – Staff Reporter
