BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday night said the High Court’s directive to the Election Commission not to accept the amended Article 7 of the their party constitution is not ‘acceptable’.

“We’ve got surprised that the High Court passed such an unprecedented order on a party’s constitution following a writ petition. It’s not acceptable to us. Political parties run by their charters and it is final. Lawyers viewed that such rule is not acceptable,” he said.

Talking to reporters after an emergency meeting at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Fakhrul further said, “We would like to clearly say that Khaleda Zia is the chairperson of BNP and Tarique Rahman its acting chairman.”Earlier in the day, the High Court asked the EC not to accept the amended Article 7 of BNP’s constitution.

The BNP’s amended charter has deleted the provision against bankrupt, insane, corrupt or notorious individuals from being BNP candidate for contesting parliamentary elections. It has been replaced with a provision that the chief of BNP will hold the office of the chairperson; and any person less than 30 years cannot be the head of the party.

Fakhrul said the government is trying to regulate politics by using the court instead of facing political parties politically. He also said the writ petition regarding the BNP’s constitution is part of the government’s plot against it.

The BNP leader said Khaleda and Tarique have been convicted through a conspiracy to remove them from politics. “The main motive behind the move is to destroy BNP. Unfortunately, they (govt) are using the judiciary as their weapon for it. We condemn it.”He warned that no one will be able to ruin BNP as people are with it. BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said they think the High Court order is ineffective as it was given on wrong information.
