HC stays bail given to MP Rana in murder case

Dhaka, March 25 – The chamber court of the Appellate Division yesterday stayed till March 31 the High Court order that granted bail to former lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in the Freedom Fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
Now, Rana, former Awami League lawmaker from Tangail-3 constituency, will not be able to walk out on bail until further order of the apex court, lawyers concerned said.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hassan Foez Siddique came up with the order following a government’s petition seeking stay on the HC order granting bail for Rana in the murder case.
The chamber judge also fixed March 31 for hearing on the government petition at the full bench of the apex court, Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah said.
Earlier, on March 14, the HC granted six-month bail to Rana in connection with a case filed over the freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
According to the case statement of freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed killing case, on January 18 in 2013, freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed was shot and killed in front of his house in Tangail town. Later, police found evidence of involvement of Rana and his three brothers in the killing.
Rana was sent to jail after his surrender before a lower court in July 2015 in connection with the case.
The victim’s wife, Nahar Ahmed, filed the case with Sadar police station on January 21, 2013.
On February 3, 2016, Mahfeej Rehman Ghulam of Tangail Detective Branch of police submitted a charge sheet in the case accusing the 14 people, including four brothers of Tangail’s powerful Khan family.
