A court Thursday sentenced a person to death and fined him Taka 20,000 for killing his wife for dowry in Nilphamari eleven years ago, court sources said.
Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Special Tribunal Court of Nilphamari and District and Sessions Judge Mian Muhammad Ali Akbar Azizi handed down the verdict in the crowded courtroom. The convicted person is Babul Hossain, 35, son of Akbar Ali of village
Panialpukur Kabirazpara under Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari district.
According to the prosecution, Babul in association with the other inmates seriously injured his wife Lucky Begum, 23, through mercilessly beating her after failing to realize Taka 20,000 as dowry from her on May 23 on 2002 in the afternoon. Lucky was seriously injured when the local people rushed her to Kishoreganj Upazila Health Complex where she succumbed at night on the
same day. Motiur Rahman, father of the deceased, filed a case in this connection with Kishoreganj Thana on the next day and police submitted charge sheet to the learned court against 11 persons after conducting long investigation.
After hearing of the case, the learned court pronounced the verdict today against Babul and acquitting the other 10 accused persons, including his father, mother, brothers and sisters, off the charges brought against them as those were not proved. Special Public Prosecutor of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Special Tribunal Court of Nilphamari Advocate Al Masud Alal appeared for the state while senior Advocate Shahidul Islam defended the accused side. –BSS, Rangpur
