Dhaka – England emerged Group C champions with all-win record to qualify for the quarterfinal of the 16-team ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup crushing Canada by a huge 282 runs in the last group match at the Queenstown Events Centre in New Zealand on Saturday. It made an easy passage for Bangladesh to reach the quarterfinal.After day’s outcome, England emerged unbeaten Group C champions securing full six points from all the three matches while Bangladesh finished group runners-up collecting four points from three outings, losing their only match to England by seven wickets.Canada was placed 3rd in the four-team group bagging two points while Namibia finished bottom with empty hand to eliminate from the main battle.Bangladesh will play their giant neighbor India in the 4th quarterfinal on January 26 at the Queenstown Events Centre while England will face their traditional rivals Australia in the first quarterfinal on January 23 at the same venue.Pakistan will meet South Africa on January 24 while hosts New Zealand will encounter Afghnistan in the 2nd and 3rd quarterfinals respectively.Sent in to bat first in the day’s match, England piled up massive total of 382 runs for 7 in stipulated 50 overs, featuring two centuries by Liam Banks and Will Jacks.Opener Liam Banks fired 120 runs off 114 balls, hitting 12 fours and two sixes to be adjudged man of the match, one down Will Jacks contributed 102 runs off just 82 balls, featuring eleven boundaries, Jack Davies scored 57 off 36 balls with four fours and one six while Luke Hollman made 14-ball 25 including three fours.Faisal Jamkhandi and Pieter Christiaan grabbed two wickets each conceding 68 and 69 runs respectively.
In reply, Canada U-19 side dismissed cheaply for 101 runs in 31.5 overs to suffer a humiliating defeat with one down Pranav Sharma (24) and captain Arslan Khan (21) were the leading scorers.Prem Sisodiya claimed three wickets for 23 runs.In the day’s other matches, Ireland beat Afghanistan by four runs, West Indies outplayed Kenya by 222 runs while hosts New Zealand defeated South Africa by 71 runs.Earlier, Bangladesh U-19 team (190/4 in 20) made a flying start in the global meet with an 87-run victory over Namibia (103/6 in 20) in the opening match last Saturday and the young Tigers (264/8 in 50) brightened their chance to play the quarterfinal beating Canada (198 /10 49.3) by 66 runs in the 2nd group encounters Monday last.UNB news agency
