ICM demands cancellation of Rampal power plant

Ideal Citizen Movement (ICM), a newly floated social group, on Saturday demanded that the government immediately cancel the Rampal coal-fired power plant for the sake of the Sundarbans. The demand was made at a human chain formed in front of the Jatiya Press Club in protest against the police action on a cycle rally of “Save Sundarbans”, a young Facebook-based cycling group.

Speakers alleged that the government is destroying the world’s largest mangrove forest to serve the interest of India.Addressing the rally, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa) president Shafiul Alam Pradhan said the government has no right to destroy the Sundarbans. He urged the leaders of National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Natural Resources and Port-Power to get united responding to the call of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in launching a movement to protect the forest. “We all should forget the differences and get united to save the Sundarbans,” he said.Bangladesh Labour Party chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran, BNP leader Advocate Abed Raza, Jagpa secretary Khondakar Lutfar Rahman, Bangladesh NAP Secretary General M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan and NDP presidium member Monjur Hossain Isha, among others, spoke at the programme with ICM convener Mahmudul Hasan in the chair.
