Increasing people’s awareness about disaster underscored


Speakers in a function here underscored the need for increasing people’s awareness about natural disasters including earthquake to reduce the losses of lives and damage of properties.They also expressed their view that Bangladesh is also in the risk of newly added earthquake as the country particularly the northern region is situated in the seismic zone because of its geographical location.They opinion came at the meeting of disaster management committee (DMC) at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) here on Thursday afternoon with DC M. Abdus Samad in the chair.The meeting was also addressed, among others, by civil surgeon Dr. Nirmalendu Chowdhury, district relief and rehabilitation officer M Habibur Rahman, leader of Fire Service and Civil Service Department here ATM Golam Mostafa, SKS Foundation representative M. Ashraful Islam and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.As Bangladesh is one of the major natural disaster-prone countries in the world, there is the high possibility of increasing the natural calamities including earthquake in the country, the speakers said.DC M. Abdus Samad in his speech emphasised on creating awareness, early preparedness, education and knowledge among the people and making them well equipped in handling disaster moments aimed at lowering the risks of natural disasters.All the members of DMC and NGO representatives including journalists took part in the meeting. –BSS, Gaibandha
