Dhaka – Defending champions Arambagh Krira Sangha reached the quarterfinals of the 13-team Independence Cup Football Tournament eliminating Team BJMC by 2-1 goals in Group A match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Tuesday.Rabiul Hasan put Arambagh KS ahead in the very 4th minute by a free kick from about 25 yards that kissed the net hitting custodian Shohag Hossain (1-0).
Nigerian forward Samson Iliasu levelled the margin for Team BJMC in the 37th minute, utilising a long pass from Mesbahuddin Arif (1-1).
Arifur Rahman scored the match winner for Arambagh KS in the stoppage time (45+2) of the first half by a cool shot with a good combination with Paul Emile (2-1).
Arambagh KS will play another quarterfinalist Saif Sporting Club on Friday (Dec 7) at 5 pm to decide the group champions.
Wednesday’s matches: Muktijoddha Sangsad KC vs Brothers Union Club (3 pm), Bashundhara Kings vs Sheikh Russel KC (5:15 pm).
Thirteen teams, split into four groups, are initially taking part in the meet with three semifinalists of the just concluded Federation Cup — Bashundhara Kings, Sheikh Jamal DC and Sheikh Russel KC– putting together in Group D.
