Innocent held in crackdown: Ershad

Dhaka-Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Saturday alleged that innocent people, not criminals, were arrested in the weeklong combing operation conducted by the law enforcers.“Innocent people have been arrested in the name of a combing operation in the month of Ramadan… real criminals and terrorists have not been detained,” he said.
Ershad, a former military dictator, came up with the allegation while speaking at an iftar party at Shyampur Balurmath arranged by local unit of Jatiya Party.
He said the country’s law and order deteriorated to such an extent that neighbouring India is voicing concern over it. “It’s a shameful matter for us. People want a change to the bloodletting in the country.”
The Jatiya Party chief also expressed frustration over the continuation of ‘extrajudicial’ killing. “Are those who get killed in crossfire and gunfight not human beings? Don’t they have right to get justice?”
Jatiya Party senior co-chairman Raushon Ershad, co-chairman GM Quader and secretary general Ruhul Amin Howlader, among others, spoke at the programme.
