It’s all about national election: Fakhrul

Claiming that it never talked about midterm polls, BNP on Saturday demanded a fresh election to make the country’s parliament truly representative one.“We never wanted a mid-term election. We don’t accept this election (10th parliamentary polls) either. A fresh election is necessary to make parliament truly representative, and it will have to be held,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a discussion.
He apparently came up with the remarks reacting to Prime Minister’s recent comment in the USA that there is no question of holding mid-term polls.
Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa), one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the discussion at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).
Fakhrul urged the government to form the next Election Commission reflecting the pubic opinion to hold the next election in a free and fair manner. “Don’t form the Election Commission by any search committee to be made by you. It should be constituted based on public opinion. Or lease, people won’t accept it.”
Fakhrul also said it is not Awami League leaders, but someone else by some other ways is running the country. “Can the Awami League leaders truly say with hands on their chests that it is their government or they are running the country? I do not think they’ll say they are nor doing it.”
He said Awami League is accomplishing the unending task of depoliticisation launched the 1/11 regime after political changeover in 2007 by repressing BNP leaders and activists.
The BNP secretary general said Awami League wants to eliminate BNP with its repressive acts to cement the one-party rule.
Describing militancy a dangerous demon, he alleged that this evil force is gradually getting bigger as the ruling party is pampering it for its parochial interest.
