Jamaat calls 24-hour hartal protesting SC verdict on Mozahid

Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 24-hour nationwide hartal from today morning protesting the Supreme Court Appellate Division verdict that upheld the death penalty of party secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid for his wartime offences.
Makbul Ahmad, acting ameer of the party, announced the shutdown yesterday through a press statement soon after the Appellate Division’s verdict was declared in the morning.The hartal will begin at 6:00am today and end 6:00am tomorrow, said the press statement.
The Jamaat ameer termed the war crimes case against Mujahid “false,” “fabricated,” and “imaginary” and demanded immediately release of their leaders including Mujahid.
He accused the government of eliminating Jamaat and staged farcical trial by filing “false” and “imaginary” cases against their leaders.
“Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid is a victim of government conspiracy…Mujahid has been deprived from justice. Country’s people are frustrated at the verdict,” he said.
Makbul Ahmad claimed that the case filed by the government against Mujahid was a conspiracy based on which he was awarded the death penalty.
He called upon the people from different spare of life including intellectuals, professionals, lawyers, educationists and workers to make the hartal a success.
Hospital, ambulance, pharmacy and vehicles carrying journalists will be out of the preview of hartal.
The statement said that Mujahid would file review against the verdict of the apex court and hoped that Mujahid would be acquitted from the case if the justice is ensured.
The Appellate Division of Supreme Court in its verdict upheld the death penalty to Jamaat leader Mujahid for killing intellectuals during the War of Liberation in 1971. – Staff Reporter
