Jamaat calls countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal Thursday

Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday called a dawn-to-dusk hartal across the country for today as the apex court upheld the war tribunal’s death sentence awarded to its ameer Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Party acting ameer Makbul Ahmad and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the programme through a press statement hours after the verdict was delivered by a four-member bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha in the morning. In the statement, the Jamaat, any ally of BNP-led 20-party alliance, alleged that the government wants to push the country towards the age of confrontation by killing Nizami in cold blood in a planned manner.
“The government had filed false cases against top Jamaat leaders including its ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami on charge of war crimes to leave the party devoid of its leadership,” said the statement.
It descried the charges against the former minister as “false, baseless, concocted and fictitious”
The Jamaat leaders called upon the people to observe the hartal peacefully.
Ambulance, fire service, vehicles carrying dead bodies and newspapers, pharmacies and hospitals will remain from out of the purview of hartal, says the statement. – Staff Reporter
