A daylong hartal, enforced by the local unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the arrest of its 21 leaders and activists, is progressing without any untoward incidents in greater Chittagong today (Wednesday). No procession or picketing was seen in support of the hartal in the district while most of the business establishments kept their shutters down. Rickshaws and battery-run three-wheelers were dominating the city streets while presence of motorised vehicles was thin due to fear of possible vandalism and arson attack. No long route buses left or entered the district in the morning. Required number of law enforcers, including Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and police, remained deployed at the important points of the city and other areas of the district to avoid any untoward incident. Earlier on Monday, police arrested 21 Jamaat leaders and activists, including its city unit ameer and former MP ANM Shamsul Islam, from the city’s Dewanbazar area. The law enforcers arrested the Jamaat men from their party office while they were holding a meeting in the afternoon. Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Mohiuddin Selim said the Jamaat men were wanted in various cases.
Meanwhile, Police arrested the city unit ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami from Brown Compound area of the city on Tuesday night. The arrestee was identified as Advocate Moazzem Hossain Helal, Barisal city unit ameer of the Islamist party. Shakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said a team of police conducted a drive at the house of Helal and arrested him around 11:45pm. However, the reason behind the arrest could not be known immediately. – UNB
