Jamaat’s 24-hr hartal underway


Dhaka  – The countrywide 24-hour hartal, enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the Supreme Court order upholding the death penalty of its ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, is underway peacefully today (Sunday).In a jointly statement, Jamaat acting ameer Makbul Ahmad and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the strike soon after the Supreme Court order on Thursday.The shutdown that began at 6:00am today will continue till 6:00pm next day.Vehicular movement was seen normal in the capital.There was almost no picketing in support of the shutdown anywhere across the country since morning.A large number of law enforcers were kept deployed in various places of the city.In Gazipur, leaders and activists of the city unit Jamaat-e Islami brought out a procession in Boardbazar area in the morning.Pickets hurled brick chips towards several vehicles and set fire on the road by pouring petrol.Around 10,000 additional police personnel remained deployed in the capital from 6:00am to maintain law and order during the hartal.On Thursday, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected death-row war crimes convict Nizami’s review petition against its previous verdict in favour of his death penalty earlier awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal.
