Japan to provide Tk 100cr loan for RMG sector safety

Japan International Cooperation Agency will provide Tk 100 crore in loan for improving the working environment in garment and knitwear
industries of the country.   A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between JICA and Bangladesh Bank, Public Works
Department, Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters
Association at a city hotel.   Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima, Chief
Representative of JICA Bangladesh office Dr. Takao Tada, Housing and  Public Works secretary Dr Khondaker Showkat Hossain, BGMEA president
Atiqul Islam and first vice-president of BKMEA Md Hatem were present.
The aim of the Tk 100-crore fund is to provide financial support to the RMG enterprises for conducting safety assessment of their
buildings under the supervision of JICA experts and engineers of the public works department under the Housing and Public Works Ministry.
The support will come from a Tk 500-crore JICA fund which is now being  used for a project ‘financial sector project for the development of
small and medium-sized enterprises’.   The JICA loan agreement for the development of the country’s small and medium-sized enterprises was
signed on May 18, 2011. – UNB
