Journos Shaukat, Probir arrested on specific charges: Asad

Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday told reporters that journalists Shaukat Mahmud and Probir Shikder were arrested on specific charges.
Minister for Information Hasanul Haq Inu at a press conference termed the arrest of Probir arrest regretful but there was no other alternative.
On the other hand, senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta at a TV talk show described taking a person without limb on remand hurriedly after arresting and putting him on handcuff unusual.
He observed that no people with conscience will accept it.The three ministers’ observations came following the arrest of journalist Probir Shikder and Shawkat Mahmud.
Probir Shikder was arrested on Sunday night in ICT case filed against him in Faridpur and Shawkat Mahmud yesterday showing him arresting in three cases of arson and vandalism.
The Home Minister also informed that Probir Shikder was arrested for his facebook status.
“Shawkat Mahmud was arrested in a number of cases filed against him not to foil any programme,” he added.
The minister mentioned that Probir had given a facebook status by holding some individuals including LGRD Minister Engr Mosharraf Hossain responsible for his death and said since Mosharraf lodged a general diary against what he said motivated propaganda. That’s why he was arrested not for writing in the facebook, he added.
Asked whether the freedom of press would be hampered by arresting journalists he replied in the negative saying that they were arrested on specific charges.
Addressing a press conference in the Secretariat, the Information Minister assured journalists that they would take care of Probir so that he is not deprived of legal support.
Replying to a question he said he does not believes that the arrest of  Probir would not create any obstruction for the freedom of press.
Meanwhile, chairman of parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Suranjit Srngupta expressed his deep concern over the arrest of Probir.
Terming journalists and journalism as institutes, he said one institute should not stand against other institute,” he added. -Staff Reporter
